Host Santo Tomas spoiled the start of UP's title defense, running away with a convincing 87-67 home win to cap the opening weekend of the UAAP Season 88 men's basketball tournament yesterday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.
Buoyed by a home turf advantage, the Growling Tigers sprinted to a scintillating 18-4 start and never pressed the breaks for a mammoth 20-point debut win at the expense of the reigning champions.
Former UAAP juniors MVP Collins Akowe feasted on the Fighting Maroons with 29 points and 17 rebounds plus an assist, a steal and a block for one of the best debuts in UAAP history as the España-based dribblers snapped a nine-game losing drought over six years against the ballers from Diliman, finalists in each of the last four seasons.
