On Saturday, Basketball Universe PHL reached 1,000,000 views on YouTube.
Though the number is not as gargantuan as larger sports or entertainment channels, it is a significant milestone, at least for us. In less than five months, our little independent channel has hit this mark despite all of the challenges. Our small team celebrated with a quiet fist pump among ourselves, then put our nose back to the grindstone.
The numbers also confirm the deep love that Filipinos have for basketball. It’s one thing to see crowds and endless hours of games. It’s another to see the statistics. Basketball Universe PHL was launched on May 14, and reached one million views in five months. Although we could’ve tailored the stories for ratings and eyeballs, we choose to do the stories, not just about retired superstars, and legends of the game. We choose to do stories about the human aspect of life in basketball. After all, as I’ve said before, these are people like us who just happen to be involved in hoops.
