Searching for a leader
The Philippine Star
|November 26, 2025
Our country is falling apart and in desperate longing for a leader. We have crisis situations in health care, education, a stagnant economy and a simmering corruption scandal with a credibility crisis on top of everything.
Our politicians have enriched themselves at our expense. Most of them are guilty of treason for betraying the national interest and should be shot. But I am still not sure Pinoys have learned their lessons.
Worse, in our country of over 120 million people, we don’t seem to have even one person who we can trust to lead us. We are talking about honesty and competence. The ambitious politicians offering themselves are the least trustworthy as this corruption scandal is showing us.
For now, we are stuck with BBM because Sara Duterte promises to be a lot more horrible. We must just nudge BBM now and then to get off his butt and get some work done.
The noise we are hearing these days from the rallies and from social media gives the impression of a nation that is angry, dissatisfied with its leaders but don’t quite know what to do to get relief from all that angst.
It is not surprising that out of the blue came a move to draft Ramon S. Ang, a non-politician, to either head a transition group to run the country or be the next president. RSA had long said he would never enter politics and that’s final.
Why RSA? Probably because he seems able to deliver results. He has the pragmatism and the focus that our current leaders do not have. He has nurtured his credibility as a competent manager since he took over the reins of San Miguel Corp.
RSA is also able to unify. That’s why he doesn’t want to be in politics. As he explained to me, the moment he enters politics, he will have plenty of enemies. And he wants to forever be friends with everyone.
