Don't let a good crisis go to waste. For the nation, this admonition is useful in a year marked by multiple crises, whether socioeconomic, political or natural.

As of year-end, economic growth has fallen below government targets. Business and consumer confidence is down, the peso has weakened and disaster preparedness for the next flooding season is in limbo.
The two dominant political forces both took a hit during the year. Former president Rodrigo Duterte landed in a prison in The Hague after being turned over to the Interpol and thence to the International Criminal Court. He is expected to face ICC trial for crimes against humanity in connection with killings during his bloody crackdown on illegal drugs.
