Opong looms

A new tropical depression has entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and was named Opong, even as Nando continues to move away from the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.

As of 4 p.m., the center of Opong was located 1,045 kilometers east of Northeastern Mindanao with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center, gustiness of up to 70 kph and central pressure of 1004 hPa. It is moving west-southwest at 10 kph.
No tropical cyclone wind signal has been raised. Still, PAGASA said Signal No. 1 may be hoisted over parts of Eastern Visayas and the Bicol Region as early as today.
