North-South Commuter Railway draws interest from Japan firms

A number of Japan's biggest infrastructure investors have participated in the market sounding for the P229-billion deal to manage the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), showing their interest in bidding for the project.
At the final leg of the market sounding for the NSCR, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) was able to gather Japanese rail builders and operators in one room to present the operations and maintenance of the NSCR.
Transportation Undersecretary Timothy John Batan said Japanese multinationals Alstom Japan, Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Corp., Sumitomo Corp. and Tokyo Metro Co. were present in the event.
These investors are no longer new to rail development and operations in the Philippines. Alstom, for instance, delivered the engineering and signaling works for the first section of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 Cavite Extension Project.
