Gilas Pilipinas bucked a slow start to hammer Malaysia, 83-58, in a rousing debut in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games men's basketball yesterday at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.

- By JOHN BRYAN ULANDAY

Bobby Ray Parks Jr. posted 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals as he led the charge for the Nationals who shrugged off an early six-point deficit before running roughshod over the Malaysians for a 1-0 record in Group A.

Nine other Gilas players hit the score board with team captain Robert Bolick and Thirdy Ravena firing away 17 and 13 points, respectively, for the Nationals who will face Vietnam next, shooting for a group play sweep for an outright semifinal ticket. The second and third-ranked squads will go through qualification play.

"It's a good win but we gotta work harder," said coach Norman Black, still working on the chemistry of the hastily-formed unit.
