The UN, the US and Tony Blair: can they work together to bring peace?

The Observer

The US has put forward a 21-point roadmap to end the war in Gaza that would see the former British prime minister Tony Blair lead an interim administration of the territory.

- Xavier Greenwood

So what? The UN has endorsed a different plan: the New York declaration. Whether the proposals converge may determine the speed at which peace comes; the support a hybrid vision garners; and the extent to which a future Palestinian state will be truly self-governing.

Recap On Tuesday, Donald Trump presented Arab leaders with a plan to end the war and a blueprint for governance. This came four days after the UN general assembly endorsed its own proposal, opposed by Israel and the US. Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, says his country would never accept a Palestinian state.

The man who would be king One eye-catching element of the US plan is the role reportedly sought by Blair, who would lead a body that would seek a mandate from the UN to be Gaza's "supreme political and legal authority" for five years.
