WHEN TAMIL NADU STOOD WITH BANGLADESH'S STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM

EVEN as the country celebrates its 79th year of Independence, there was a time when the Tamil Nadu Assembly had, in 1971, unanimously passed a resolution congratulating the efforts of a neighboring country in successfully galvanizing its countrymen towards achieving freedom.

WHEN TAMIL NADU STOOD WITH BANGLADESH'S STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM

In December 1971, at the fag end of the nine-month Bangladesh Liberation War, M Karunanidhi, chief minister of a state over 2,000 kilometers away, moved a resolution condemning Pakistan for refusing to respect the democratic verdict of the people of East Bengal and unleashing military action against lakhs of people who raised their voice against the suppressive military regime of West Pakistan.

"The autocratic military regime of Pakistan slaughtered lakhs and lakhs of East Bengalis for their patriotic fervor and call for an independent Bangladesh," the resolution stated. The House resolved to offer "all cooperation" to the Government of India to inflict a "crushing defeat on the enemy and ensure a glorious victory".

December 16, 1971 marked the ratification of the 'Instrument of Surrender' by which the Pakistan Eastern Command surrendered all Pakistani armed forces in Bangladesh, officially paving the way for establishing the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
