Human-wildlife conflicts on the rise in Himachal

HUMAN-wildlife conflicts are increasing in Himachal Pradesh due to the presence of Asiatic black bears and leopards, which primarily prey on sheep, goats, cattle and dogs, according to the recent wildlife census titled 'Population Estimation and Assessment of Human-Wildlife Conflict' released by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).
The report has identified Kullu, Chamba, Mandi, Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti and parts of Sirmaur districts of the hill as major conflict zones. Meanwhile, the state is home to 529 black bears, with 307 bears and 333 leopards being individually recorded. The leopards are responsible
