CHAMPIONS Manchester City began the defence of their Premier League title with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge here on Sunday.

Haaland scores as City begin campaign with win

Erling Haaland, the Golden Boot winner from the previous season, scored the opening goal in the 18th minute of the tie.

Mateo Kovacic, a former Chelsea man, sealed all three points for Manchester City with a superb strike in the 84th minute.

The match marked Enzo Maresca's first match as a Chelsea manager.

Earlier, Brentford shrugged off the absence of Ivan Toney to get their season off to a flying start with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa got the goals for the Bees, who had left out England international Toney over speculation surrounding his future.
