Climate change, rising production costs upset Himachal's apple cart
The New Indian Express
|January 02, 2025
WITH weather becoming warmer due to climate change and cost of production increasing, apple growers in Himachal Pradesh now prefer to grow stone fruits.
Himachal is the second largest producer of apples after Jammu and Kashmir. Farmers and horticulture officials say the net profit in apple cultivation has reduced to below 50% of the total sale.
"Due to freak weather and high cost of production, the apple production is going down as the growers are now venturing into stone fruits like almonds, plum, apricot, cherry besides persimmon. The cost of production has increased by 30-40% as more fungal infections and pest attacks on apple crop require more medicines and output is less," said Rakesh Singha, a leading apple grower in Shimla district.
