All-party meet on SIR calls ECI Delhi puppet, decides to move SC

AN all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin in Chennai on Sunday decided to move the Supreme Court to halt the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu "to protect electoral democracy".
A resolution adopted by the meeting charged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is functioning as a puppet of the BJP-led union government, and urged the agency to conduct the SIR after the 2026 Assembly polls in an impartial manner.
The resolution said that as the ECI has refused to accept the concerns raised about the SIR by political parties, there is no other alternative than to approach the apex court to safeguard the voting rights of the people of Tamil Nadu. Hence, the all-party meeting has resolved that the political parties in TN will jointly file a petition before the SC to protect electoral democracy, it stated.
"Implementing the SIR in 12 states (nine states and three union territories), including Tamil Nadu, without rectifying the irregularities witnessed in Bihar, is tantamount to depriving citizens of their voting rights and burying democracy itself," it added.
