Fadnavis leads MahaYuti battle for Mumbai against reunited Thackeray cousins; Ajit Pawar with uncle’s party hopes to unseat BJP in Pune

- SUDHIR SURYAWANSHI @ Mumbai

CAMPAIGNING for the high-stakes elections to 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra ended on Tuesday evening, with spotlight on the Mumbai big battle, where the BJP-led MahaYuti and reunited Thackeray brothers are making a strong pitch to control the richest Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spearheaded the campaign for the ruling alliance. Analysts say a victory in BMC polls is important for Fadnavis to strengthen his political position in the state. Cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, who came together after 20 years in the run-up to the elections, are banking on consolidation of Marathi and Muslim votes to defeat the BJP-led alliance.
