ISRO Tests Key Component for India's First Manned Underwater Ocean Mission

INDIA's first manned ocean mission Samudrayaan moved a step closer to launch, with ISRO announcing on Wednesday that it had successfully tested the personnel sphere of the Matsya-6000 submersible at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram.

The titanium-alloy sphere, designed to carry a three-member crew up to 6,000 metres underwater, has a diameter of 2,260 mm and a wall thickness of 80 mm. It can withstand external pressure up to 600 bar and temperatures as low as -3°C, ISRO said.
