Melma ryots flay govt, burn effigies of min Velu, DMK MP, MLA

MEMBERS of the Melma Anti-SIPCOT Farmers' Movement on Sunday went up in arms against the DMK government, which, according to them, is engaging in anti-farmer activities.
Farmers staged a protest in Nerkundram by burning the effigy of DMK MP Tharanivendan, DMK MLA Jyothi and Highways Minister EV Velu to express their anger against the government.
According to farmers, the DMK government has failed to keep its poll promise of protecting farmers' lands.
The anger stems from government's move to acquire 1,200 acres of farmers' land for expansion of a SIPCOT project in Melma panchayat.
The protest follows an incident on February 14, when revenue department officials arrived unannounced to measure wells and trees on farmers' lands in Melma. When the farmers questioned the officials, they were reportedly chased away.
