Thamirabarani pollution: HC permits sewage pumping stations in OSR land

THE Madurai Bench of Madras High Court recently permitted Tirunelveli city corporation to set up sewage pumping stations in lands earmarked as Open Space Reservation (OSR) land in Tirunelveli, after the corporation commissioner gave an undertaking that the pumping stations would be odour free and would not pollute groundwater.
Though the Supreme Court had ordered in a 2023 case that OSR lands should not be diverted for any other purpose, a special bench comprising justices G R Swaminathan and B Pugalendhi took the decision after authorities explained that the pumping stations are going to be established below the ground level and therefore, the said lands would still be available for OSR purposes.
