Proposal to hike financial aid for kin of fishers lodged in SL jail welcomed

THE announcement to increase the daily financial assistance provided to the families of fishermen, detained in Sri Lankan prisons, from ₹350 to ₹500 has been appreciated by the fishermen of the district.
Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, during the 2025-26 budget presentation on Friday, had announced the establishment of infrastructure facilities, including fish landing centres and fishing net mending facilities in 14 coastal districts, to improve fishermen's economic status.
The minister also announced an increase in compensation for mechanised fishing boats under Sri Lankan custody to ₹8 lakh, and the country craft motorised boats to ₹2 lakh.
