Court Says 'No' to Plea for Ban on Observing Leaders' Anniversaries

HOLDING that sufficient measures are being taken by the state for smooth conduct of events like Thevar Jayanthi, Immanuel Sekaran anniversary, Maruthu Pandiyar Guru Poojai, Mutharaiyar anniversary, etc., the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday refused to prohibit observance of the events in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and other sensitive areas in the state.
A bench of justices Anita Sumanth and C Kumarappan took the stand while disposing of a PIL filed by G Sathya Priya of Madurai seeking a ban on the events, two days ahead of Immanuel Sekaran anniversary on September 11. Priya stated that every year, several incidents of caste-based violence take place during said events in Ramanathapuram and neighboring districts. Despite taking preventive measures, the respective district administrations and police have not been able to effectively control the situation, she alleged.
