Row over cremation ground sparks protest in council

THE Palakkad municipal council witnessed dramatic scenes on Tuesday as opposition members disrupted proceedings over alleged irregularities surrounding the Mattumantha public cremation ground.
The uproar centered on accusations that the BJP-led council allowed unauthorized construction by a specific community organization at the site.
As the council session commenced, the councillors from the Left and UDF began waving placards and shouting slogans. The protestors alleged that despite the council's approval for only basic amenities — such as a shed and borewell — to be built on the allocated land, the Valiyapadam unit of the Nair Service Society (NSS) had constructed a boundary wall, which they claim violates the original permit.
