Rising water levels prompt spillway shutter openings at dams in Palakkad

IN response to continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, authorities have begun regulating water levels at key dams in Palakkad district.
Spillway shutters were opened at the Kanjirappuzha and Mangalam dams, while Meenkara Dam is nearing its maximum storage capacity, prompting an alert.
At Kanjirappuzha Dam, the water level at 3.15pm stood at 94.27 metres. Due to incessant rainfall in the catchment area, three spillway shutters of the dam were raised from 20 cm to 30 cm at 4.30pm to regulate the rising water level. This is expected to cause a rise of approximately 30 cm in the downstream river water level. Residents along the riverbanks have been urged to remain alert.
