TMC wins bypoll, 9-year-old girl killed in violence

JUST before Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Alifa Ahmed secured victory in the Kaliganj assembly bypoll, a 9-year-old girl was killed in a bomb explosion in the constituency.
Class IV student Tamanna Khatun was returning home in Kaliganj's Melendi area when splinters from a crude bomb, allegedly hurled from a victory celebration of the TMC, hit the child. She was rushed to a nearby health centre but died of her injuries. "I was returning home with my son and daughter. Suddenly a group of people came and hurled the bomb; it killed my daughter," the victim's mother said, adding that they are known supporters of the CPI(M) but not cadre.
