IN a significant decision, the state cabinet on Wednesday accepted the recommendation of the high-level screening committee to bestow DGP rank to ADGP MR Ajith Kumar, who is now heading the armed battalions.

He will be promoted to the DGP grade by July next year when a vacancy arises after the retirement of State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb.

The 1995-batch IPS officer has been facing a Vigilance probe on allegation of amassing of wealth. S Suresh, who is on central deputation with the Special Protection Group, will also be promoted to DGP rank.

After Padmakumar's retirement on April 30 next year, Law and Order ADGP Manoj Abraham, who is of 1994-batch, will be promoted to DGP rank. Ajith's promotion will take place after that.
