Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka said the memory of the Emergency period still sends chills down his spine.
Inaugurating the event titled 'Emergency Imposed by Congress: 50 Years of Dark History' organised by the BJP here on Saturday, Ashoka urged everyone who values the Constitution and democracy to remain vigilant and active in defending them.
"The Emergency was declared after the Allahabad High Court found then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi guilty of misusing government machinery during her 1971 Lok Sabha election campaign. The court disqualified her from holding elected office for six years under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. As demands for her resignation grew, she declared an Emergency. During this time, citizens were denied the right to seek redress in courts. Opposition leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, and many others were arrested and jailed," Ashoka explained.
