No water in tail end areas, say farmers, blame illegal tapping

WHILE the Periyar main canal and the Thirumangalam canal play a major role in irrigating over two lakh acres in the district, farmers have continuously flagged that the tail end areas do not receive adequate water for irrigation.
Farmers pointed out that illegal tapping of canal water was the reason behind this issue.
Even though the district collector, during two consecutive agriculture grievances meetings, urged the water resources department officials to take criminal action against the illegal water tapping, steps are yet to be taken to address these issues.
About 2.08 lakh acres of cultivation area in Madurai, Theni and Sivaganga area rely on the Periyar dam for irrigation. Apart from the Periyar main channel and the Thirumangalam channel, the 58th canal and 18th canal also rely on the dam. According to official sources, about 34 mcft water is required to irrigate the traditional cultivation areas.
