EMINENT leaders, including members of the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Opposition, were placed under house arrest on Sunday to prevent them from visiting the martyrs' graveyard in downtown Srinagar on "Martyrs' Day" and pay homage to the 22 Kashmiris killed by troops of Maharaja Hari Singh on July 13, 1931.
Nasir Aslam Wani, an advisor to CM Omar Abdullah, told this newspaper that the elected government was being detained by the nominated government. "I was placed under house detention and so were our ministers Javed Dar and Sakina Itoo," he said. He lamented that the CM's Gupkar residence was also locked while he was not in Srinagar. "Similarly, Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary's official residence at Gupkar was locked while he was in Jammu".
