The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has ordered a chief vigilance officer (CVO) to investigate a complaint filed by the Indian Youth Congress Kerala State regarding a disturbing number of suicides and dropouts at the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C).

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @Kozhikode

The complaint, filed by the Youth Congress general secretary, Dulkhifil, alleges a pattern of academic pressure and a lack of institutional response to student distress.

The CVC's order, dated February 20, 2025, acknowledges the "alarming issue" and directs the CVO of NIT Calicut to scrutinize the allegations and take "necessary action." This move comes after the Youth Congress submitted a formal complaint to the CVC, highlighting data obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

According to the complaint, filed on February 20, 2025, there have been seven student suicides and seven attempted suicides at the campus over the last decade. The complaint also reveals that a staggering 540 students have dropped out without completing their courses during the same period.
