THE sinking of a container vessel off the Alappuzha coast has triggered a crisis for the local fishing community, rendering nearly 40,000 fisherfolk jobless for the past four days in Alappuzha and Kollam districts.
The Disaster Management Authority has imposed a temporary fishing ban in the affected coastal zone to prevent further ecological damage and ensure the safety of fishermen.
The halt in fishing activity has severely impacted the livelihoods of thousands of families, mainly in the coastal areas of these districts.
