IN Bacheda village of Jhansi district in UP's Bundelkhand region, a lady constable, Yadav by caste, landed in a soup because she married her childhood friend, an inspector who happens to be a Patel.

- NAMITA BAJPAI @ Lucknow

Her village panchayat issued a social boycott order against the girl's family for the inter-caste marriage and slapped a hefty fine on them. The police ignored their plight until higher officials intervened.

Both families supported the union and solemnised the marriage on April 30, but the villagers rejected the inter-caste relationship. The enraged villagers convened a meeting of the village panchayat on May 13 and declared the inter-caste marriage unacceptable.
