TURKISH Cypriots are expected to take to the streets on Friday to protest a new regulation allowing students to wear the hijab in secondary schools, a move that critics say undermines their people's secular traditions.

In March, the council of ministers of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognised only by Turkey, amended the school disciplinary code to permit headscarves in high school. Middle schools were given the discretion to decide whether to allow them.
