KERALA'S SEASON OF RENEWAL AND CELEBRATION

Chingam marks the arrival of the Malayalam New Year, also known as Kollavarsham, and it is celebrated with traditional ceremonies, festive meals, and cultural gatherings across Kerala. For Malayalis, this month is much more than a mention on the calendar. It is a season of renewal, arriving after months of harsh, wet and tiring weather.

An Auspicious Beginning The first day of Chingam is believed to be especially fortunate. Astrologically, it coincides with the Sun's entry into the zodiac sign of Leo, or Simha Rashi. The Malayalam calendar, unlike many other Indian systems that follow lunar cycles, is solar-based. It is similar in structure to the Gregorian calendar, but it is deeply connected to Kerala's cultural and seasonal patterns. The months are based on the movement of the Sun, and Chingam 1 usually falls in mid-August. This alignment makes it relevant for agricultural communities, as it reflects the farming cycle.

Roots in History The Kollam Era, which forms the foundation of the Malayalam calendar, dates back to 825 CE. Historical accounts trace its origin to a royal decree issued at the ancient port city of Kollam by King Udayamarthanda Varma of Venad. Scholars, working under royal patronage, developed this calendar to suit the needs of the region. It was adopted not only across Venad but also in other parts of the Chera kingdom.

Kollavarsham is unique because it is entirely solar-based and closely linked to the farming seasons of Kerala. Festivals, rituals, and agricultural work follow its months. Even though the Gregorian calendar is used for most official and commercial purposes today, Kollavarsham still plays a central role in setting the dates for religious celebrations, harvest festivals, and traditional events.
