Religious freedom being violated, says CBCI prez on nuns' arrest

CALLING the arrest of two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh a "very painful incident", Mar Andrews Thazhath, president of Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), said the matter had been brought to the attention of the Prime Minister, Union home minister and MPs Suresh Gopi and George Kurien.
"But the general atmosphere is one of fear," he told reporters at Mount St Thomas, the headquarters of the Syro-Malabar Church, in Kakkanad on Monday. He demanded the duo's immediate release.
The two nuns, Sr Vandana from Kannur and Sr Preethy from Angamaly, along with a third person, were arrested at Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, based on a complaint by a Bajrang Dal functionary.
