Salvaging the nearly 500 sunken containers not possible until mid-Sept due to rough sea: Experts
WITH MSC Elsa 3 capsizing, the bunkered fuel (the fuel used to power the ship) has started spilling while nearly 100 containers, which have been lost overboard, are drifting towards the shore in the South-West direction. The ship sank with over 500 of the 640 containers it was carrying.
According to experts, it is not possible to salvage the containers until mid-September, when monsoon is over, as the Arabian sea is very rough at present.
"The Arabian sea is very rough due to the southwest monsoon. The wind and the current is towards the southwest direction. The Indian Navy and Coast Guard have started taking measures to contain the spread of oil spill," Captain Jismon Jaicob, Alappuzha port officer and registering authority of Kerala Inland Vessels, told TNIE.
