SC to hear pleas on CEC appointment process
The New Indian Express Hyderabad
|March 20, 2025
The Supreme Court on Wednesday fixed April 16 for hearing a batch of pleas challenging the appointment of the chief election commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners (EC) under the 2023 law.
The law excludes the Chief Justice of India from the panel for the selection of CEC and ECs. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), sought an urgent hearing into the matter.
He requested the bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh for an immediate hearing, citing that "this matter goes to the root of our democracy" and the issue is covered by the 2023 Constitution bench verdict.
