Production of free dhoti, saree for 2026 Pongal to begin earlier than usual

THE state government has issued a GO for free dhoti and saree production for 2026 Pongal earlier than usual this year.
An administrative sanction has been given to produce 1 crore 46 lakh 10,000 sarees and 1 crore 44 lakh 10,000 dhotis this year, excluding stock.
The government has allocated ₹75 crore for this in the first phase. Officials told TNIE that the production is likely to start by early June. Last year it started in September.
