'UCC intent is Hindu-Muslim divide'

EAGER to position the party as the ‘the champion of the Muslim community against the onslaughts from Sangh Parivar’, the CPM has said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is primarily targeted against the community. Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury, who inaugurated the seminar on UCC organised by the party in Kozhikode on Saturday, stressed that the intention behind the proposed law is to create a Hindu-Muslim division.

It may be recalled that the Muslim organisations had cautioned against the danger of portraying the UCC as a religious issue, which would in their opinion amount to falling into the trap laid by the BJP. But it seems that the CPM has not listened to the advice and has decided to go on treating it as a Muslim issue.
