THOUSANDS of people undertook a 16-km-long rally from Narasingampatti village in rural Madurai to the Head Post Office in Tallakulam, Madurai city, to protest against the Union Government's tungsten mining project in Melur taluk.

Thousands rally against tungsten mining, seek protection of farmland

Despite police denying permission and deploying hundreds of personnel, the rally proceeded as planned and culminated in a protest at its destination. The protesters also demanded that the State Government declare the Mullai Periyar irrigation areas in Melur taluk as protected agricultural regions to prevent activities such as tungsten mining.
