States to Get More Powers to Handle Disasters: Shah

Parliament on Tuesday passed the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill 2024, which aims to improve efficiency of the national and state disaster management authorities, with the Rajya Sabha giving its nod to the legislation by a voice vote.
On December 1, the Lok Sabha had passed the bill, which brought in amendments to the Disaster Management Act of 2005.
Replying to the debate on the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah said that there will be no centralization of powers or discrimination with states in handling disasters.
In the Rajya Sabha, amendments were moved by Opposition members, but all of them were disapproved by the majority of the House. As the opposition parties criticized the Centre for showing political bias, Shah emphasized that the legislation will help states in handling disasters in a better way.
