THE ongoing construction of NH-66 from Kazhakoottam in Thiruvananthapuram to Malappuram is likely to be stalled soon due to an acute shortage of soil (red earth) and stones.

NH-66 work in Kerala likely to be stalled soon

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) used to mobilise stones and rocks for the construction from various districts in Tamil Nadu. Since the Tamil Nadu government banned the functioning of quarries, the NHAI could not bring the stones.

Similarly, the local people who are residing close to the soil quarries in various districts in Kerala are protesting against soil mining as it affects their health. There are also stringent restrictions imposed by the mining and geology department of the state government on quarrying in various districts.
