DISPROPORTIONATE INFLUENCE OF BOLLYWOOD
The Morning Standard
|November 05, 2023
THE festive season has once again brought along DJ parties featuring popular filmy numbers. It set me thinking on the level of intrusion in our lives that we have allowed the film and television industry.
Only cricketers and politicians can get close to the level of visibility this industry commands. The industry provides employment to many creative, technical and business professionals. It plays an important role in society. It entertains us and allows us to be away from everyday hassles. As artists, they hold a mirror to the society and show us viewpoints we might have missed.
But their influence and financial muscle have become highly skewed. I see no reason for the kind of influence they have on every aspect of our society. Nor do I understand the highly disproportionate amount of money a few of them command. This skew is putting many other things out of balance.
