Changing soil profile after Punjab floods raises fertility worries

RECENT floods have left thick layers of red sand and silt across large areas of Punjab, changing the soil profile and raising concerns about the fertility of farmland ahead of the rabi season.
The deposits, carried from the Himalayan foothills, have mixed with native soil and formed a dense layer that prevents water from seeping in and restricts root growth.
These facts emerged from a study by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) covering Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, and Patiala.
