10-day judicial custody for Purkayastha
The Morning Standard
|October 11, 2023
A city court on Tuesday sent NewsClick founder-editor Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakraborty to 10-day judicial custody under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case slapped by Delhi Police.
The case is allegedly linked to funding to the latter's news portal for "spreading pro-China propaganda." As the police pressed for judicial custody for 10 days before Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Hardeep Kaur, Purkayastha's counsel Arshdeep Khurana strongly opposed the charges, asking how his client as a critical journalist could be involved in unlawful activities.
The counsel argued that all the journalistic works of his client are in the public domain.
