Mamdani to be New York's first Muslim mayor

Since his surprise victory in the Democratic Party primary in June, New Yorkers have become used to seeing his bearded, smiling face on television - and on badges proudly worn by his supporters.

The 34-year-old election winner was born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin. He went to school in Cape Town in the mid-1990s when his father, Professor Mahmood Mamdani, accepted a post at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

During their years in Cape Town, Mamdani attended St George's Grammar School in Mowbray, one of the city's oldest private schools.
