NEWCASTLE
United bounced back from Sunday’s derby day disappointment in style, beating Fulham 2-1 in dramatic fashion to win through to the Carabao Cup semifinals. It means Newcastle have set up a two-legged semifinal against Manchester City, with the first leg at St James’ Park next month.
Here’s five things we learned from the win over Fulham.
HOWE'S PRE-MATCH VOW
Howe has spent the last three days offering his reflections and apologies on Sunday’s derby defeat but he used his final word in the matchday programme to draw a line under it.
The United head coach said the time for talking was done and they had to show their response on the pitch. “We won't hide behind excuses,” Howe said.
“Our response will ultimately be defined by what we deliver on the pitch, not what we say. We know we must demonstrate the qualities that have been our hallmark in recent seasons and use the pain of a setback as motivation to secure our third semifinal place in the last four years.”
