Storm-battered region braces for icy conditions
The Journal
|January 28, 2026
A NEW weather warning has been issued for the North East after Storm Chandra struck the region yesterday.
Storm Chandra brings strong winds to the North East
Heavy rain, snow and strong winds caused problems across the North East, and the Environment Agency issued a series of flood alerts.
Coastal areas saw gusts of up to 55mph as well as heavy rain. A yellow weather warning for rain and snow, covering County Durham and Northumberland, was already in place until yesterday evening.
Another yellow warning was sent out, this time for ice, running from midnight last night until 10am today.
Weather experts warn that “patchy ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces by tomorrow morning and may lead to some disruption”.
People are being urged to take care as icy surfaces could lead to injuries from slips and falls. There could also be risks for drivers and cyclists as icy patches are likely on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
