A SPEEDING driver left a cyclist with 12 broken bones and a collapsed lung after smashing into him.

- ROB KENNEDY

Johnathan Hobson was travelling at around 60mph in a 40mph zone when he failed to spot Justin Moore ahead of him in Cramlington, Northumberland.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he didn't brake until he was "virtually on top of him" and left him in a crumpled heap on the ground, in agonising pain, with a broken femur, broken collarbone, 10 broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

The court heard Mr Moore was riding his bike at around 4pm on May 13 last year on the A1172 in Cramlington.

As he cycled on the 40mph dual carriageway as it merges into a single carriageway, he checked over his shoulder to ensure it was safe to move over to turn right.

He saw there was no-one in the outside lane so he signalled and commenced turning right.
