Reform to probe 'wasteful spending'

REFORM UK has announced plans to scrutinise "wasteful spending" in local councils, with County Durham set to be under the microscope later this year.

The party will deploy teams of software engineers, data analysts and forensic auditors to "visit and analyse" local authorities, kicking off with Kent County Council this week. Drawing inspiration from the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) in the United States, which until recently was fronted by billionaire Elon Musk, the initiative aims to slash unnecessary expenditure.

Reform UK plans to utilise artificial intelligence, advanced data analysis tools and forensic auditing techniques to "identify wasteful spending and recommend actionable solutions".

The comprehensive review will examine contractual arrangements with suppliers and consultants, all capital expenditure, and the use of reserves and financial resilience.
