CONSTRUCTION work has started on a flood alleviation and defence scheme on the Town Moor, as Newcastle City Council looks to avoid a repeat of the damage caused by the infamous 'Thunder Thursday' storm.

The Blue Green Newcastle project is a joint effort between the council, the Freemen of Newcastle, the Environment Agency and Northumbrian Water, to make the city more resilient to major storm events, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

Saturday will mark the 13th anniversary of 'Thunder Thursday', in June 2012. A powerful storm caused around £70m of damage across the city, including surface water run-off from the Town Moor which flooded residential and business properties in South Jesmond.

Now, contractors are developing a sustainable drainage solution.
