Man operating illegal scrapyard avoids jail

A NORTHUMBERLAND man has avoided jail after operating an illegal scrapyard on his land.
Dominic Allan, 30, of Old Swarland in Northumberland, was sentenced at Newcastle Magistrates' Court for two offences of operating an illegal waste site, which he had admitted.
It followed an Environment Agency investigation which saw officers attend Allan's property and discover a mixture of scrap vehicles, construction and demolition waste, garden and household waste. There was also an area of burned waste.
He claimed not to know that he needed a permit to store waste and that he was not currently taking in waste or operating a waste site.
Allan said the “bulk” of vehicles were not his and were being stored by an associate who had rented out the space.
