A FORGOTTEN WWI female football star has finally been recognised with a commemorative headstone.
Jarrow's Mary Lyons, who died in 1979, became the youngest-ever England footballer and goalscorer when she scored at St James' Park in 1989, aged 15, in front of 20,000 people on her debut.
That record still stands today, but Lyons has been largely written out of football history until very recently.
The Friends of Jarrow Cemetery group has helped to get Mary a permanent headstone after she featured heavily in the Wor Bella play by South Tyneside writer Ed Waugh.
